Mudvayne, with support from Static- X and Vended, came to the iconic Hollywood Palladium on September 29th. One of the things I love about this line up is all the bands wear some sort of paint and/or masks, so the fans dress accordingly. I love seeing all the different interpretations. There was a young kid sitting on shoulders with cool face paint and totally into the songs. I love seeing the kids! Crowd surfers were pouring over, big shout out to security for catching everyone.
Vended kicked off the night. Due to LA traffic, I missed my photo opportunity, but caught their last two songs. I think this is my 4th time seeing them and I love that it’s never the same look. They started young so it’s awesome watching them grow and evolve into their own. Lead vocalist is Griffin Taylor the son of Corey Taylor, and percussionist Simon Crahan is the son of Shawn “Clown” Crahan.
Static-X was up next. They’ve been on my must see list for awhile. I saw a glimpse of them on a jumbo tron at Sick New World in 2024 and I was intrigued. They have a few huge characters come out on stage and it snows in an Edward Scissorhands kind of way. I thought the cool mask with lighted eyes and big hair was just their thing, but it’s a tribute to Wayne Static. He passed away in 2014, with the new lead singer staying anonymous (now we know is Zer0) for a while, keeping it about the music. Tony Campos is the original bassist, and if you feel like you see him everywhere…you do! He’s played with Soulfly, Possessed, Ministry, Prong and currently plays with Fear Factory as well as Static-X. I loved their set, their vibe and energy.
Mudvayne is celebrating the 25 year anniversary of their debut album L.D. 50. Do we feel old yet? “Dig” is 25 years old! While they didn’t play the entirety of the album, they did perform “-1”, “Severed”, “Internal Primates”, “Death Blooms” and “Cradle”. Lead singer Chad Gray has such an iconic look with his signature overalls, face paint, bullet hole, and mohawk. It’s such a creepy and intriguing look that is so mesmerizing to look at!
In between songs, Chad has what I call "Chad talks” throughout the night talking about the importance of mental health and taking care of each other. That when people fall in the pit, you pick them up, so carry that energy outside of here as well. The metal community takes care of each other, we look out for one another, pick each other up, because we are FAMILY! I love that bands openly talk about the struggles and how to be there for each other. He also gave a shout of love to guitarist Greg Tribbett, who recently lost his wife to cancer just a few weeks ago. Mudvayne is always entertaining and the Chad Talks are my favorite.
