Rob Thomas, with support from A Great Big World and The Lucky, ended their tour at the YouTube Theater in Los Angeles. We usually cover metal and punk rock shows here, but we love music, so sometimes an opportunity arises and we get a whole different experience.

We started the night with The Lucky, a trio of life long friends that are destined to be your new favorite boy band. They were cute telling the story of doing this all on their own, no nepotism whatsoever (Maison is Rob Thomas’ son), and maxing out their credit cards so grab a tour shirt. They just dropped a new single called “818”. After their set they were hanging out at a merch with a long line of people to get photos.

A Great Big World was up next. They started out in 2012 as a duo of Ian Axl and Chad King. I’m not sure of the time frame, but Axl said he took a break to get married, have three kids and realized he missed performing and wanted to get back to it. However, Chad was not on this tour due to personal reasons and Ian said it's the first time without him and it just feels strange. Their biggest hit “Say Something” helped me work through a relationship. The way it is sung hits all the emotions from sadness, a desperation for an answer, to finding the strength to leave the situation. You can love someone, but know it’s time to let it go. Hearing that song live was so beautiful. It reminded me of all the car rides that I sang with tears streaming down my face and that moment I said goodbye. Music and lyrics are life changing. At the end of his set, he got a standing ovation.

Rob Thomas came out in a Hawaiian shirt and blue jeans which is exactly how I always picture Rob Thomas. He’s the lead singer of Matchbox Twenty which he called the greatest band in the world, but he also has a successful solo career. He made a few comments about being old, and when he introduced his son (who just played with The Lucky) on guitar, my daughter’s jaw dropped. She thought Rob Thomas looked like he was in his 30s, and he still sounds exactly the same, there’s no way that’s his son. He started off with “I Believe It”, a song off his new album, All Night Days. He also played “Picture Perfect”, "Hard to Be Happy”, "All Night Days”, off that album. As he was introducing the next song “If You’re Gone”, he said the song was written before Maison was born. Maison is 27. The song was actually released in 2000, but it's still hard to believe that was 25 years ago!

He told a story about a stormy night in Phoenix while on tour with Matchbox Twenty many years ago. After a show he went to the bus and his dog needed to go out. He was still in rockstar mode and with people outside the bus, there was no way he was going out to walk his dog. The dog was looking all sad, but he drove 5 mins down the road and stopped at a hotel to let his dog do his thing. He said his dog was so happy and made him realize right then to be in the moment. That his dog is happy being in this moment with him, so be present in the little moments. He wrote the song “Little Moments" after that.

Tony award winner Lena Hall came out wearing a The Lucky tour shirt and sang a cover of David Bowie and Queen’s “Under Pressure”. They were amazing together! After that he played his most popular song with Santana  “Smooth”, Maison did an amazing job on guitar for this one. This was the last night of the tour, but be sure to catch them next time! Even though it’s not our usual genre and we had a great time!
